Blog Tour (Excerpt + Review): Tortured Sinner by Tessa James

My name is Johnny, and I dance with the devil.

Tortured Sinner, the first in the all-new dark Sinners and Angels Duet from Tessa James, is available now!

At least, that’s what I tell people, so they stay as far away as possible.

I never meant to get mixed up with the wrong crowd, but if you want to win a war, you have to get your hands a little dirty.

The plan was to keep myself isolated, until an angel walks into my life that makes my dead heart start to beat again.

She’s sweet and innocent, and everything I shouldn’t want, but I can’t seem to stay away.

It’ll take everything I have to resist the magnetic pull between us, but what if Claire is the salvation I need?

Review:

Before I get to the review, I want to really put it out there that this story has few triggers.

Just one more thing that I really want to mention is the cover. I love the cover of this book. It's super hottttt!!!!!!!

In tortured Sinners we follow Johnny and Claire. Claire has moved to a new place and is living with her mother who has been absent most of her life. The building that she lives in, is where she first meets Johnny, a mysterious, stunning man. As the story progresses so does the chemistry between them. And this is exactly what hooked me to the book. Even though it is a super slow burn romance, it still is amazing in the sense that, both the characters find peace and safety in each other's company.

This was my first ever book from Tessa James and I can tell you that it won't be the last.  Claire and Johnny, are such strong characters. They both are equally caring towards each other. And they both respect each other's space. The fact that they both don't force each other to unveil all their secrets and give time to each other, is commendable.

I liked the writing style. It is simple and easy to follow. The character development is on point. However, there were times that I really felt that the slow burn was super slow. A simple fact that these characters only hooked up after 70% of the story was done, made me somewhat frustrated at times. Secondly, I felt that the suspense in the story was a little under developed. I mean there were murders happening but it didn't feel like murder. The entire intensity of the situation where a murder happens is missing. Thirdly, I felt the story ended pretty abruptly.

Nevertheless, I am still interested in reading the second installment. I really want to know the end of the story.

It's because of the above reasons that I would rate this book a 3 out of 5 stars

Excerpt

Something visceral convinced my legs to move, to go after this girl who I don’t know. It wasn’t a creepy stalker kind of thing. But more of a she just got here and might get lost thing. A strange rush of protectiveness washed over me when I saw her leave the building and venture out into the world. I already got her to hate me, and that alone might be all the protection she needs, but what if something else happens? Why is my brain telling me it’s my responsibility?

If I just confirm she makes it to wherever she’s going, maybe that will be enough.

I keep a natural pace while maintaining some distance between us, completely walking in the direction away from where I really should be going. I glance down at my watch, verifying that my little detour won’t set me back too much.

The girl's chocolate brown hair falls down her mid-back, gently swaying with each step she takes. Her arms are crossed over her chest like she might be cold. Or that she's using it as some kind of barrier from the outside world.

That train of thought makes my protective urges rise even more. I don’t know her name, and yet I have an innate need to shield her from any danger.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

About Tessa

Tessa James is the author of dark contemporary romance. She adores writing broken characters you won’t help but fall for on their journey to find themselves and fight for what they love. Her stories are for the hopelessly romantic who enjoy grit, angst, and passion.

When she’s not writing, you’ll find her consuming way too much coffee, making endless to-do lists, and spending time with her daughter and cats in small-town Ohio.

Review : The fall of a god by Holly Renee

BLURB

Innocent. Blameless. Pure. Heartbroken.  Josie Vos belonged to the one family I hated more than anything.

And I had forced her to despise me just as much.

It didn’t matter that I had lost track of my plan and fallen for my enemy.

Irrevocably hurt and enraged by my deceit, she had no intentions of doing anything but watching me lose my throne.

The secrets of our families can never be forgotten.

I knew that from the beginning, but I refuse to allow the sins of our families to determine our future.

I should have left her alone and let her hate me.

I didn’t.

I was going to fight for her, even if she now held all the power.

Review:

The fall of a god is the second book in the boys of Clermont Bay series. You can read my thoughts about the first book, Touch of a villain, here.

Fall of a god starts exactly where the touch of a villain ended. The story flows from the first book to the second, seamlessly. But coming to the main point, fall of god was the perfect ending.

This book is super hot and full of romance that it becomes super hard to not finish reading it. The story lingers on in your mind even after that. Beck is broody, yet an amazingly handsome guy. I can't believe that he is fictional. I loved his determination to make things right. They only thing that bugged me about him is that he is gullible and made really stupid decisions at times in the story. But man he is hooootttt.

Coming to Josie, she is strong, beautiful and the only person, I believe on this planet that can handle a person like Beck. The amount of difficult situations she goes through is heart breaking, and I kept on rooting for her throughout the book.

The writing is beautiful, smooth and engaging. I loved how from the first page itself, I got hooked on to it. And was sad when I finished it. Oh and the twists in the story are very well thought through.

I loved these two books through and through. I can't emphasis enough. For all the enemies to lovers romance readers out there, do make it a point to pick these books up, they are literally all the perfection you need.

I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

Review : Beautiful Legend by Waverly Alexander

Beautiful Legend, enemies-to-lovers romance that has been reworked with all-new material from Waverly Alexander, is available now!

I’ve spent every day since I was seven hiding my past, trying to forget the attack that killed my mother and my sister.
The attack I barely survived.
Now, I never let anyone in.
Even the people who would consider me a friend.
They don't know the real me.

Joshua barged into my life my junior year of college.
Brooding, mysterious, and barely talks to anyone—Joshua Travin is allegedly as skilled in the bedroom as he is on the rugby field.
He’s everywhere I go, always watching.
Despite his obvious distaste for me, I find a familiar comfort in his green eyes.

This book has been reworked and contains never before read bonus material.

Review:

Beautiful legend by Waverly Alexander has been a read with many mixed feeling. Don't get me wrong, I loved the intensity between the protagonists, Addison and Joshua. Joshua is this guy who deals with a lot of guilt from his past. Addison, on the other hand, is a girl who has experienced childhood trauma and hardly remembers the events of the trauma.

Few things that I loved about the story were, Remi (rescue dog) and Addison's relationship, the intensity of romance between Addison and Joshua, and the suspense. Remi and Addison share a very beautiful relationship. I really felt that as a person Addison is very considerate and a soft hearted individual. She rescues dogs and tries to give them good life. Once you read the story, you will understand her reasons and I am sure that will pull at your heart strings. Coming to the romance, it's hot, exciting and passionate. The plot of the story is one that will keep you hooked till the end. The suspense created throughout the book is very gripping.

Coming to the things that didn't really work for me. Firstly, I am not a big fan of the cover (though that doesn't really affect my rating). Secondly, the description of the story says that it's an enemies to lovers romance, I felt that it was more of a stalker romance than enemies to lovers. Thirdly, I am not a big fan of love and chemistry at first sight. I really felt that somewhere the relationship between the characters didn't really develop, and neither did the characters evolve with the story.

In short, after reading beautiful legend, I didn't really have a definite feeling of whether I loved it or not. And hence, I would rate it a 3 out of 5 stars.

Excerpt

He pushed away from the sink and moved toward me, forcing me to press my back further against the door.

“You’ve been sulking around campus, popping up everywhere, glowering at me like I’m some horrible person.” I waved my hand at him, exasperated. “You act like I lured your sweet, old grandmother out to an alligator-infested swamp and nudged her in.”

He snorted, trying not to laugh, but I could see the flash of glee in his eyes. He smiled a real smile, one that reached his eyes and stretched his cheeks, showing his straight, white teeth and hitting me right in the gut with the realization that I’d seen that smile before.

“You’re not… ” he started, and I could see the thoughtful confusion etched in his features before he finished his thought by saying, “what I expected you to be.”

“What does that even mean?” I scrunched my nose in distaste at his words, which made me feel strangely inadequate. “Do I know you?”

“Nothing,” he said distractedly, his eyes studying my face intently like he was looking for something that just wasn’t there. “You’re beautiful,” he murmured so slowly and softly that my breath hitched in my lungs, and for a moment I forgot how to expel the air I need to survive.

I started to move again, but he closed in on me—close enough that I could feel his heated breath on my cheek, his chest not quite touching mine. His palms were flat against the door on either side of my head. His fiery stare sparked my nerves, not because I was afraid of him, but because I could feel the heat spreading from my cheeks, down my neck, and to my chest.

I pushed my palms against the hard planes of his chest, but he didn’t budge. “I’m leaving,” I said, but it didn’t sound convincing, even to me.

“Are you?” He smirked, pushing closer.

Let me love you by Siobhan Davis

Let Me Love You, the highly-anticipated and jaw-dropping conclusion to the All of Me Duet from USA Today bestselling author Siobhan Davis, available now!

My heart and soul forever belong to two men.
It’s an irrefutable truth that won’t ever change.
Reeve is the air I breathe.
Dillon is the fire that consumes me.
How am I expected to live without a part of my heart?

Review:

Let me love you is the second book in the All of me duet. Read my review of the first book in this duet here.

I was so looking forward to this second installment. After reading Say I'm the one, I was super curious to know what events would unfold. This story will break you before it heals you. It will make you sob at times, but everything is worth it. This duet is full of drama, romance, incredible plot, beautiful cast of characters and scenes that will pull your heart strings. It is one of those stories that will stay with you for a while. It's also a sort of commentary on fandom in the times of social media. How this can affect a person and their loved ones life.

Let me love you starts from the scene where Say I'm the one ended. The story flowed smoothly into the second book. As a reader, I wasn't difficult to recall the story from the first book. This made the reading experience a more easier and I could just deep dive into this story without worrying about whether I remembered the story from the first. The author also gives enough recap of the story in the first book, which are very well woven into the story. They are not given as a separate chapter, but are a part of the story.

The characters throughout this duet are well rounded and relatable. Had I been a part of such an intense situation, I might have reacted the same way. My heart goes out to the female protagonist, Viven, in this story. She didn't deserve all the stuff she went through. An individual needs immense amounts of emotional strength to endure such a life and keep on living. She is strong and has a heart of gold.

The plot of the story is well crafted and paced, with multiple twist and turns. If you are a person that loves drama with romance, you will love the plot. These twist and turns provide the storyline with intensity that just makes everything better.

Unlike the first book, the second book deals, with stuff like grief associated with losing a loved one, and finding the strength to move on in life. These elements were well done and well written. Siobhan Davis has done a commendable job at writing how losing a loved one wreaks havoc on a persons' life and how it takes time to heal.

Even though I loved the story through and through, I found it dragged a little in certain parts. And I didn't really understand the need for the twist at the end. I am not complaining, but the twist at the end just felt a little out of place for me.

However, loved this duet and am happy with the way it ended. The ending somewhere gave me a sense of closure. All of me, is a well done duet. And one that people who are into drama should surely pick up.

I would rate Let me love you a 4 out of 5 stars.

Excerpt

“I won’t pretend to know the exact inner workings of your mind, nor am I asking you to tell me, but you’re my brother, and I know you well enough to know part of what is going through that thick skull of yours.” She grabs a towel from behind her, gently mopping the wetness on my face. “You love her. I know you do. Like I know it terrifies you to trust your heart to someone. I understand she hurt you, but she’s hurting too. I should’ve knocked your heads together weeks ago and forced you to have a conversation about the future. You’ve both been skating around it instead of just talking.”

“We did talk. I told her how I felt. I asked her to stay, and she said no.”

“You sprung it on her at the last minute, Dil! You didn’t even give her time to consider it before you stormed off all butthurt.”

“She rejected me, Ash.” I rub at the tightness spreading across my chest. “She was never going to choose me over him. She’s been in love with him most of her life. A few months with me isn’t going to change that fact.”
